BOSaNOVA Adds Encryption to Thin Clients by Alex Woodie
BOSaNOVA last week announced that it has added SSL encryption capabilities to the 5250 emulation running on its thin clients. The technology was added to help customers comply with the Payment Cardholder Industry (PCI) mandates, according to the company, which has been moving strongly into the IT security arena over the last year.

BOSaNOVA has increased performance on a number of System i-compatible thin-client devices. The updated 1300 Series is now powered by a 1.5 GHz VIA processor CPU and is available in two versions, Linux (LTC-1300) and XPe (XTC-1300), which offer an 802.11 b/g internal wireless option, dual video with wide-screen support, and built-in PCI
and PCMCIA slots.

Raz-Lee Signs BOSaNOVA to Resell Security Software by Alex Woodie
BOSaNOVA is getting the security bug. Once focused primarily on System i terminals and emulation, the company broke into the security business with the introduction of its Q3 data encryption appliance earlier this year. Now, BOSaNOVA is hooking up with Raz-Lee Security in a new partnership to sell Raz-Lee's i5/OS security software, the companies announced last week.

New BOSaNOVA Appliance Encrypts Tape Backups by Alex Woodie
BOSaNOVA this week announced a new appliance that encrypts tapes and other portable media as backups are being performed. Called the Q3 Storage Security Encryption, the new device is intended to prevent sensitive data from being compromised should a tape get lost or otherwise fall into the wrong hands, which has been occurring with surprising regularity.

BOSaNOVA Delivers New Thin Clients by Chris Maxcer
BOSaNOVA ships its 1300 Series Thin Clients. The 1300 Series is powered by a 1.3 GHz C7 VIA processor CPU and is available in Linux (LTC–1300) and XPe (XTC–1300). The LTC–1300 and XTC–1300 are available with an 802.11 b/g internal wireless option and built-in PCI and PCMCIA slots. Both units include the 8X AGP Graphics Accelerator, 5250 emulation, Remote Desktop Protocol, support for the Independent Computing Architecture, and Lotus Notes support. In addition, the LTC–1300 is available with Firefox browser, OpenOffice, and the Common Unix Printing System, while the XTC–1300 includes eTrust Antivirus for XPe, IE6 SP2, Shockwave, Quad Monitor Support option, Sun and Microsoft JVM, and MS Office Viewers.

BOSaNOVA Ships New Additions to the Thin Client Line by Chris Maxcer
BOSaNOVA adds two new thin clients to its RBT Series product line. RBT-802 and RBT-820 are powered by the AMD Geode LX 800 processor and offer an optional built-in wireless option. The thin clients are available with browsers, 5250 emulation, and SNMP-based management software. The RBT-802 Linux thin client includes the Thunderbird e-mail client and is integrated with Common Unix Printing System. The RBT-820 CE.Net thin client includes MS Office Viewers and enables multiple browser windows and 5250 split-screen support.

BOSaNOVA Contributes New Wireless Tablet Thin Clients by Chris Maxcer
BOSaNOVA adds two new wireless thin client tablet models to the BOSaNOVA Thin Client family. The new 360XP and 360CE BOStablet replace the 366 Series models. The 360XP offers increased storage and RAM, a built–in biometric sensor for enhanced security, and a PCMCIA slot. The CE version is available with a faster processor, AMD LX 800. The 360XP and 360CE both include full screen 5250/3270 emulation, Office Viewers, RDP, and ICA. Users can centrally manage the new models with BOSaNOVA's management software.

Choose the Right Thin Clients for your System i by Martin

In the beginning, thin-client terminals booted from a server, had very slow CPUs with small amounts of memory, and relied on application servers to provide needed features. It is no surprise that these early thin clients didn't take off because delivery was poor (high bandwidth requirements, low color support, no sound, etc.) and the application servers themselves didn't support applications very well.

Security for iSeries
5250 emulation is getting a closer examination as companies are becoming wise to
the fact that a majority of security breaches are internal rather than external.
To address this issue, Better On-line Solutions (BOS) has enhanced its 5250
Client software, BOSaNOVA TCP/IP, with the added security of 128-bit SSL
Encryption, a centralized manager module, and single sign on. The new product is
named BOSaNOVA Secure, however, existing BOSaNOVA TCP/IP users can also add the
security features to their existing systems.

BOSaNOVA unveiled
BOSaNOVA Secure, a single sign-on product that combines TN5250e Client, 128-bit
SSL encryption, a management console, and single sign-on capabilities. The
solution uses iSeries Kerberos technology to enable 5250 emulation and iSeries
application access via TCP/IP within a secure environment. It provides
synchronization of passwords between the iSeries and Windows servers, total
administrative control over user configuration, software updates, and
network-distributed changes.
BOSaNOVA also previewed
Cross Run, a tool for deploying applications to thin clients. The wizards-based
tool, available next month, lets administrators manage which users and terminals
can access specific applications housed on a number of servers. The product
supports Windows CE.NET, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. BOSaNOVA plans a Linux
version for the fall. For a limited time, BOSaNOVA will give Cross Run for free
to customers using its BOSaNOVA CE.NET Thin Client as an extension to the
BOSmanager software.

stragglers take note: BOSaNOVA introduced a tool at the COMMON conference last
week that automatically merges iSeries data with Microsoft Office programs and
documents. There are many other iSeries-to-Windows integration capabilities of
OLE-based Launcher/400 Office, for which BOSaNOVA gained exclusive distribution
rights in North America from its French developer. BOSaNOVA also used the show
to flesh out its thin client lineup with two Windows-based, touch-screen,
wireless tablets and a low-end, bargain-basement Linux device.
